Gamers worldwide watched with bated breath as Sony unveiled its design for the PlayStation 5 in June. Sony took the market by surprise, offering two versions of the coming console. The standard and digital versions look impressive, and we’re excited to get our hands on one of the first models.
With Xbox Series X launching around the same time, we can expect another heated console war between Microsoft and Sony this Christmas. In this post, we’ll unpack the specs and features surrounding the highly anticipated launch of the PS5.
PS5 Console Specs and Features
Thanks to media leaking details on the PS5 in as early as March 2020, and Sony’s official launch, we have some hardware specs to consider.
Here are the PlayStation 5 Specs and features at a glance.
- CPU – 8x Zen 2 Cores running at a variable frequency of 3.5GHz
- GPU – Custom RDNA 2 – 10.28 TeraFLOPs, 36 CUs at a variable frequency of 2.23GHz
- Memory – 16GB GDDR6/256-RAM, 448GB/s
- Storage – 825GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
- Expandable storage – NVMe SSD Slot and USB HDD support
- Optical drive – 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray
Looks impressive, right? Let’s take a deeper dive into each of the specs. While we’re at it, we’ll look at a few of this console’s standout features as well.
PS5 Console RAM and Processing Power
The PS5 comes with a powerful CPU setup featuring an eight-core AMD 7nm processor, similar to the Zen-2 Ryzen setup.
The custom chipset features eight Zen-2 Cores clocking 3.5GHz with variable frequency capability. The PS5 gets 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, with 6GB running at 336GB/s and 10GB at 560GB/s.
Ray-Tracing and GPU
The PS5 GPU features microarchitecture based on the AMD Radeon Navi, with a custom RDNA-2 chip. The GPU features support for ray tracing, focusing on a hardware-led solution rather than a software-based approach.
As a result, the PS5 produces a staggering 10.28 TFLOPs, featuring 36 custom-cores, clocking 2.23GHz with variable frequency.
The specs show the PS5 comes with 4K-capability, featuring native 60-fps gaming, and support for gameplay up to 120-fps. Sony does state they’re releasing the PS5 with 8K capability.
SSD Storage
The PS5 gets an SSD setup in its latest evolution. The 825GB SSD speeds up loading times, and it’s possibly the most significant change between the PS4 Pro and the PS5. The SSD comes with an expandable NVMe SSD Slot for additional expanded storage.
The PS5 comes with impressive data throughput speeds at 5.5GB/s, with compressed data running 8 to 9GB/s. Considering the size of today’s games, with some being well over 100GB, the 825GB SSD doesn’t seem like much. However, the addition of the expandable Seagate memory circumvents this issue.
With the PS5, you get notably faster data transfer times, featuring onboard processing for fast processing. As a result, you get plenty of functionality in your gameplay, including game restarts on specific levels, straight from the home screen. There’s no more waiting for the whole game to load.
3D Spatial Audio
The AMD chipset included with the PS5 dramatically improves the system’s audio hardware. The PS% comes with a 3D spatial audio experience, presenting a significant upgrade over the previous generations.
When wearing headphones, you get a 3D spatial sound that’s realistic, with sound approaching in a 360-degree presentation. The result is a natural sound with excellent realism.
PS5 Console Specs 4K Blu-ray
The biggest change in the PS5 design was the separation of the platform into two specific models – the standard and the digital. The standard model includes a 4K-Blu-ray disc drive with this version, lacking on the PS4 Pro.
The digital version offers a full wireless interface, avoiding the need for any disc drive. Naturally, we can expect the addition of the disc drive to add significantly to the price.
What Do We Know About the PS5 Console Specs User Interface?
After waiting on the PS5 launch rumors, many gamers sent inquiries about user-interface changes with this new model. The Sony design team outlined that gamers can expect a complete overhaul of the UI with the PS5.
According to Sony, gamers can expect a UI that focuses on practicality, offering an entirely new visual language and a complete UI architecture redesign. So far, we’ve only seen teasers of the new UI in the media, and it’s exciting to think about the possible changes when we look at the spec upgrades in this post.
Is PS5 Backwards Compatible?
PlayStation fans breathed sighs of relief with Sony announcing the PS5 will come with backward compatibility for PS4 games. However, the design team did mention that not all PS4 games will be compatible – we’re assuming they will continue the most popular titles.
Sony also mentions they’re planning free upgrades to many games, migrating them to the PS5 platform. Gamers receive these upgrades on the purchase of a PS5 platform on release. Sony mentions they’re working with publishers like CD Projekt Red and EA to make this happen in as many titles as possible.
DualSense PS5 Console Specs Controller Upgrades
We wrap up this spec review with a look at the new controller setup for the PS5. This news is the first major design overhaul of the controller since the launch of the original PlayStation. While each platform’s evolution, we saw minor changes to the controller, but the PS5 has an entirely reworked look.
The next-generation “DualSense” controller marks the first design deviation on the traditional “DualShock” design pf the previous platforms.
The DualSense features a radical new design language for Sony that matches the consoles.
The array of buttons hasn’t changed much, although the controller has upgraded high-definition haptic feedback, which should make traditional rumble settings look antiquated.
The controller includes the first version of Sony’s attempt at adaptive triggers, finally catching up to Xbox. The controllers also feature built-in microphones, providing chat capabilities without a headset.
The PS5 will support PS4 DualShock controllers, but with limitations on functionality. You can expect to receive a range of new accessories included with your purchase alongside the impressive changes to the console and the controllers. You get a charging dock, HD camera, headphones, and Sony takes another shot at the media remote.
